Flamenco Dancer
11 x 14in | 27.94 x 35.56cm | Acrylic on Canvas | 2024
Inspired by my Spanish side (Dad's side) and the flamenco dancer dolls I would play with at my Grandparents' house. My Grandma Dolores had a little set of them that were on one of her end tables and I loved them like my barbies. My Grandma was very proud of our Spanish roots and her house was filled with little trinkets and reminders of Spain, birthplace of her parents. The female doll had a bright yellow dress but I chose this moody minty looking green in honor of the green ottoman that was in the same room. I would play and sit on that ottoman throughout my entire childhood. The dolls would too, they'd dance and sometimes give each other a kiss on this magical ottoman. I just loved the color so much and I always associate it with the comfort of being in my Grandparents' living room. The polka dots are to honor the fact that my Grandma wore them quite a bit. They are a staple in Flamenco dance culture as well. Olé!
